A Morning at Shelly Tots

Shelly Tots is a local early learning centre in St Ives, and on 2 July 2024 our team spent the morning there running a children’s oral health session. It’s part of our wider community involvement, which includes visits like this one to early learning centres around the area.

The idea was simple: turn a topic that can feel a bit clinical into something the kids could actually enjoy. No lecture, no worksheets. Just a relaxed session with plenty of questions and a few laughs along the way.

What Did the Kids Learn?

The session covered three things: how to brush properly, which foods are better or worse for teeth, and getting comfortable with the idea of visiting the dentist. We kept it hands-on, using props and simple explanations instead of technical language, so the ideas landed without feeling like a lesson.

A relaxed introduction like this, well before any of the children actually need dental care, generally helps them feel more at ease about the dentist later on. Familiarity now can make a real first check-up feel a lot less like a big deal.

It’s the same unhurried approach we use with young patients in the chair at St Ives Smiles, where children’s dentistry visits are built around going at their pace.
