Why North Shore Families Choose St Ives Smiles Dentistry

Every age in the family is looked after by the same team, from a toddler’s first check-up to adults who have always found the dentist a bit nerve-racking.

Dr Jeremy Hockey, principal dentist at St Ives Smiles

“Good dentistry isn’t about telling people what to do. It’s about giving you a clear picture of your options, then supporting the path that’s right for you.”

A good fit for nervous kids?

Children are seen from their very first tooth through their teenage years, and we give younger patients the time they need to settle in. Eligible children can also use the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.

One dentist for the whole family?

One team looks after every age, a toddler’s first check-up alongside a grandparent’s denture review, with a service history in St Ives that goes back to 1985.

Nervous in the chair?

Happy gas and oral sedation are both given in-house by our own dentists, and IV sedation is available through a visiting sedationist for longer procedures.

Thinking about your smile?

Cosmetic options include teeth whitening, veneers and clear aligners such as Invisalign, with a digital preview so you can see the plan before deciding to go ahead.

Replacing a missing tooth?

Dental implants are planned here with a 3D CBCT scanner, and Dr Jeremy Hockey holds a Fellowship of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (FICOI).

Making treatment easier to pay for?

HICAPS claims are processed on the spot for most major health funds, eligible children can use the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, and payment plans are available in-house or through humm.

Cracked or knocked a tooth?

A knocked, cracked or aching tooth gets a same-day appointment where one is available. Call the separate emergency line on 0422 270 577 and the team will talk you through what to do next.

Keeping more under one roof?

Wisdom teeth removal, standard root canal treatment, crowns and dental implants are all treated here, so less ends up needing a referral than at many general practices. Complex or unusual cases are still referred out case by case.

Who You’ll See at the Practice

Dr Jeremy Hockey and Ms Theresa Tran-Nguyen have owned and run St Ives Smiles since 2022, leading a team that still includes founding dentist Dr Bentley Sacks. Previously known as Dr Bentley Sacks’ Dental Surgery, we are a long-standing dental practice of over 30 years servicing the North Shore from St Ives. Dr Hockey also holds a Fellowship of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (FICOI), worth knowing if dental implants or another tooth-replacement option is what brought you here.

Most visits start with general dentistry, the check-ups, cleans and fillings that keep a family’s teeth healthy, with cosmetic treatment such as teeth whitening and clear aligners for anyone after a different finish. Children’s dentistry is often booked alongside a parent’s visit, and emergency care is fitted in the same day where possible.

From our home in St Ives, we care for families right across the Upper North Shore, including Gordon, Pymble, Turramurra, Killara, Wahroonga, Lindfield and Roseville. See the full areas we serve, or head to our St Ives dental practice home page.

At St Ives Smiles Dentistry, we aim to provide you with quality and caring dental service whilst incorporating the ever evolving modern age of dentistry.

Your North Shore Questions, Answered

What happens at a first visit?
A first visit typically includes a check-up, a review of dental history, and X-rays if needed, so the dentist has a full picture before recommending any treatment.
What do treatments cost at St Ives Smiles?

A guide to some common treatments:

  • Check-up: comprehensive exam with X-rays from $191, scale and polish from $180
  • Dental implant: single tooth with crown from $6,000, consultation from $360
  • Teeth whitening: take-home kit from $450, in-chair from $650
  • Invisalign: full treatment from $8,500, consultation from $500
  • Veneers: composite from $650, porcelain from $2,300
  • Wisdom tooth removal: simple from $300, surgical from $530

HICAPS is available on the spot, the Child Dental Benefits Schedule applies for eligible children, and payment plans are available in-house or through humm.

How often should I have a dental check-up?
Healthdirect Australia and the Australian Dental Association recommend a check-up every 6 to 12 months for most people, even without any symptoms. That’s an aim rather than a fixed rule, since a dentist may recommend a different interval once they’ve seen a patient’s own teeth and gums.
When should my child first see a dentist?
Healthdirect Australia recommends bringing children in for their first dental check-up by their first birthday, or as soon as their first tooth appears, whichever comes first, with regular check-ups continuing after that.
Does St Ives Smiles accept CDBS?
Yes. Reception checks CDBS eligibility and the remaining benefit at the appointment, and the scheme covers a defined list of basic services: check-ups, X-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, root canals and extractions, though orthodontic treatment and anything cosmetic sit outside it. Eligibility depends on three things lining up in the same calendar year: Medicare cover, being aged 0 to 17 for at least part of that year, and a parent or carer receiving a qualifying payment, Family Tax Benefit Part A being the one most families already get, though it is not the only payment that counts. Nothing needs to be applied for separately; eligible families are sent a letter.
What are your opening hours?
The practice is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30am to 5pm, Wednesday from 9am to 4pm, and Saturday by appointment. Sunday is closed.
Which North Shore suburbs does St Ives Smiles serve?
We care for families right across the Upper North Shore. We have local pages for Gordon, Pymble, Turramurra, Killara, Wahroonga, Lindfield and Roseville, each with directions and parking details, and we welcome patients from the surrounding suburbs too.
Where on the North Shore is the practice?
St Ives Smiles is at 7/160 Warrimoo Avenue in St Ives, just off Mona Vale Road beside St Ives Shopping Village, central to the Upper North Shore. There is free on-site parking at the door, unmetered and with no time limit.
Is St Ives Smiles taking new patients?
Yes. New patients from across the North Shore are welcome. Call (02) 9488 8378 or book online and reception will find the next available appointment.
Is there a bus to the practice?
Yes, depending on where you are coming from. The 194 runs the Eastern Arterial Road corridor from the East Killara, East Lindfield and East Roseville side to a stop by St Ives Shopping Village; the 195 and 582 run from Gordon Station; and the 591 runs from Wahroonga on weekdays. St Ives has no train station, so many patients drive, with free parking at the door.
Why do families travel from across the North Shore to St Ives?
Usually for the same team seeing every age of the household under one roof, with a service history in St Ives going back to 1985. Wisdom teeth, implants, crowns, root canals and orthodontics are handled in-house, so less ends up being referred elsewhere, and there is free untimed parking at the door.
